With the Christmas festivities in full swing I decided I wanted to go for a Christmas lunch and when I saw The Sipping Room Igloos, I knew we had to go! The Sipping Room is the latest addition to the renowned Drake & Morgan bar group, setting up shop in London’s busy Canary Wharf. The restaurant located in West India Quay had six giant pop up igloos! Filled with sheepskin throws, fluffy cushions and electric heaters it was bound to be the most Christmassy lunch ever!

We had to pre-book our food order via the booking website, I found this slightly annoying as what if I didn’t want to eat what I ordered, on the day? None the less I ordered the Salmon on Rye for starters, I was super excited to eat this as I love salmon, but honestly, it was nothing amazing the rye was so dry I could just about bite into it. Also, my friend who ordered the soup for starter was served MOULDY bread, yes, mouldy bread…. So it wasn’t the best start.
For mains I ordered the Turkey which came with potatoes, pigs in blankets, stuffing and vegetables. This was delicious, the only issue I had were the sprouts were so hard, had they even been cooked? I’m not sure, but I don’t like sprouts so I wasn’t too bothered! However, my friend ordered the steak and asked for it to be ‘medium’ when it came it was basically rare! Again, they had to take it away and recook another piece! Wasn’t happy at all. Moving on to dessert, which was the best I had the Christmas pudding with brandy sauce and I loved it!
The Igloos were great, with stunning views of Canary Wharf it was the perfect place for a Christmassy lunch. The only recommendation I would have for the igloos is to add some Christmas music? If you end up sharing an igloo with another group I doubt you’ll want to listen to other peoples conversation so having some music would be a great touch.
The service we received from the waiters was awful. Harsh I know, but honestly, they had no personality, were super grumpy and unfriendly and considering a lot of people were there for a Christmas meal, where was the Christmas spirit? Also, when we raised the issues of the mouldy bread and the uncooked steak no one seemed to care or apologies. Personally, I do not think they should offer a Christmas experience like this if the staff aren’t going to make it ‘Christmassy’ as it is not cheap a cheap dining experience.
The Igloos were lovely, a super festive thing to do with friends and family. However, I was not wowed by The Sipping Rooms there are lots of Igloo pop ups around London so I would probably go to one of those next time. The service for me really let this restaurant down, which is such a shame as I know with the right service and if the attitude of the waiters was improved, it would be 5*.
I’m unsure if the service is usually good but this review is purely based off my experience.
